Aqua, the Hydration Dragon

Read Time:3 Minute, 19 Second

Mythical, they claimed but nevertheless. From ocean depths never explored before, they rose above the sky to quench the people’s thirst.

The Captain of the RainCatchers

Mountains, dales and lakes as far as eyes can see. Clouded coastlines with gems arising from the water surfaces. Winds that carry birds, aromas and spores to the most outlying hollows. The blue and green landscapes hide much magnificence and many mysteries.

One of the stories that may uncover a riddle or two is about a dangerous creature, a hydration dragon. Some say it’s a legend, but Toodle claims they’ve seen her. And she goes by the name of Aqua.

Eospark — Refers to the attribute of the eospark tree. This type of wood releases tiny sparks of electricity when clashed together. It could be used as a power source if appropriately handled.

The grounds are barren and parched on this side of the mountains, but that does not stop children from pretending to be fighters with their eospark sticks. Only one thing can make them stop and gaze at the horizon, that familiar scent that indicates danger ahead. Clouds are packing and drift over the lands as the stench gets stronger whilst the sky expands. The youngsters drop their weapons and run towards the elders, wrapping themselves in thick pelts and watching the dusky heavens. Occasionally a dark figure blocks the light and casts a shadow over the surface. The tribe’s protectors ready their mortars to defend this place from any hazard that may descend, although it would be the first in many years, as nobody has seen this terror since their last Captain disappeared.

When the stench is most potent, the RainCatchers span massive sheets of hide over the pathways between the cabins that funnel into reservoirs underneath the town. It is the time of patience until the heavens break and release their driblets.

Cutting the clouds, evading the mountains and gliding through lakes and oceans with great majesty and epic proportion. Wings of blue and a spine of orange are all you see come by as a hydration dragon patrols Cloudweep Vale. However, the birds avoid her as she is the ruler of this valley and the knowledgable abyss. To keep her skin wet and hydrated, she aviates dark clouds where the air is humid. Absorbing water on her hide, leaving nothing but the whispy tails of virga clouds until she returns to the valley. — Not everyone is pleased with the existence of a hydration dragon. The RainCatchers on the barren lands see them as a threat, hoarding the crops’ moisture and preventing the rain from reaching the surface. And so it shows, as some years later, the Captain of the RainCatchers enters the valley carrying a pneumatic crossbow and only a few steel bolts and confidence. He sets up at the highest peak and relies on patience until, with great accuracy, the steel bolt pierces not only a wing but also the soul of the beautiful blue creature. Spiralling down, hitting sharp rocks and trees upon landing, this is the end for an adult dragon. The nearby gems light up and slowly fade, except for one…

Everything is dark, and the walls feel rough but delicate; slight pressure makes a soft crackling sound that echoes. A sliced beam of light hits her in the snout and blinds, giving the first taste of life. Aqua opens her eyes, and the emerald colour shows a tiny blue spark, making a burst of water crash into the egg and release her. What a newborn hydration dragon lacks from being fragile, possibly the most vulnerable of all hatchlings, they make up for with the magic they gain from the vale’s gems.
